Truffles are a fungus that grows below ground. They are not mushrooms, but rather a fungus that grows in conjunction with a host Oak tree. Chocolate truffles, a chocolate preparation designed to look like truffles should not be confused with the real thing.

Truffles can be divided into two categories, white and black. Both are highly prized and very expensive. Truffles have a distinct, sharp pungent taste.
